Scotland teacher facing DWI charge resigns

Vickie White Leavitt, a Scotland County teacher charged last week with drunken driving on her way to school, has resigned from the school system.

“She’s no longer employed with us as of Monday,” said Larry Johnson, the personnel director for Scotland County schools.

Last Thursday, a Southern Pines police officer charged Leavitt with driving while impaired, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and failure to properly secure a child in a car. She was driving to Wagram Primary School — where she was a first-grade teacher — with one of her 7-year-old students in the car, a report said.

Leavitt, who is 48, caught Sgt. Robert Williams’ attention when her Toyota did not move after a light turned green on Morganton Road, according to an affidavit. Williams described Leavitt as being “unsteady on feet” and having “red, glassy eyes” after he pulled her over shortly before 7 a.m.

Her blood alcohol level was .30, almost four times the legal limit of .08.
